BLUES BEFORE SUNRISE FOR 11/26/17
BLUES RECORDS FROM 1939

This week on Blues Before Sunrise we take a look at the year 1939. We'll do it as only we here at Blues Before Sunrise can, by examining and listening to selections recorded during the year 1939 - working through the year, month by month, with selections from various genre including Blues, Jazz, Gospel, and Hep Harmony. It seems as though the popular trend at this time was Swing Music - with The King of Swing, Benny Goodman leading the way. His popularity had a trickle-down effect on all the other types - with even Country Blues adding horns to their recordings. Among the prominent artists recording during this year we'll hear from Big Bill Broonzy, the Inkspots, Elder Charles Beck, and Bessie Smith's niece, Ruby Smith. It's Blues from 1939 - only on BBS!

BLUES BEFORE SUNRISE FOR 11/19/17
YANK RACHELL INTERVIEW

This week on BBS we’ll present our interview with Blues mandolinist Yank Rachell. This interview dates from September 1984. Pete Crawford, who worked with Yank, took me to Yank’s home in Indianapolis. We’ll intersperse his vintage recordings with our conversation for ninety minutes worth of great blues and Blues history. Then during Hour #4 we’ll spin sides originally issued on Johnny Otis’ DIG record label – including sides by your favorites like Sailor Boy(?), Little Billy Robbins(?), Robert McKirby(?), and Larry Waters(?)! OK – I hadn’t heard of ‘em either but just you tune in and check ‘em out – they rock! It all happens on BBS – All you have to do is stay awake – I’ll do the work…
