THERE ARE TWO PLAYLISTS BELOW

THIS WEEK’S PROGRAM

+ LAST WEEK’S PLAYLIST

BLUES BEFORE SUNRISE FOR 5/10/20
THE YEAR 1930 FOR THE PARAMOUNT LABEL

AND THE YEAR 1954

This week on BBS we examine two years in terms of the Blues records made during those years. During Hour #3 we’ll listen to records made for the famed Paramount Label during the year 1930. We’ll work  month-by-month, working our way through the calendar year, see which Paramount artist recorded during which month. Then during Hour #4 we’ll listen to sides done during the year 1954 – in no particular order. It’s just a gimmick to listen to artists and records we might not otherwise get around to.  If you like old Blues records we’re your pal! Only on BBS!

BLUES BEFORE SUNRISE FOR 5/3/20
THE HEEBIE JEEBIES

This week on BBS we’ve got the Heebie Jeebies – it’s not so much a theme as just a case of curiosity on my part. Last week I played sides by Leo Watson who was a renowned scat singer. In setting up the songs I mentioned that the first person to popularize scat singing was Louis Armstrong. In 1926 he was in the studio recording a tune called Heebie Jeebies. In the middle of singing the tune the sheet with the lyrics blew off the music stand and Louis kept swinging and started singing nonsense syllables to fill in.    I was curious to hear the original, looked it up in the discography and found there were 159(!) different versions of Heebie Jeebies. You know me, my first thought was “How many versions do I have in the collection?” I did manage to show some restraint and we’re only going to listen to a half dozen versions in a row – so the meds DO work, sorta. Join us during Hour #2 we definitely have the Heebie Jeebies. Only on BBS!
