BLUES BEFORE SUNRISE FOR 6/16/19
PREWAR & POSTWAR

This week on BBS it’s Prewar/Postwar. When I first started to listen to Blues there were two concepts that made a lasting impression on me; One, that Blues was divided into two camps – Prewar and Postwar Blues. The dividing line was WWII. Anything recorded before the war was Prewar Blues – Anything recorded after WWII was Postwar Blues. Major differences in a nutshell - before WWII a great majority of the Blues was played by solo artists on acoustic instruments. After the war it was often played in an ensemble format on amplified instruments. The other concept that made a lasting impression was the considerable catalog of tunes that each camp shared in common. Tunes originated and recorded by artists before the war were often performed and recorded by Blues singers after the war. The more I listened and collected the more obvious it was that each camp had these tunes in common. Hours 3 & 4 this week will serve as a good listening reminder of this delightful Blues tradition. Prewar/Postwar - Only on BBS!

BLUES BEFORE SUNRISE FOR 6/9/19
VOCALION LABEL RECORDING BEFORE 1932

This week on BBS we listen to sides on the Vocalion Label. I remember Bob Koester explaining to me the fact that the rights to sides on the Vocalion Label were split between different companies. Any recordings made before January 1932 became the property of the Decca Label while anything after December 1931 became the property of the Columbia label. This week we’ll spend time listening to sides on Vocalion before 1932. Big names in this feature include Tampa Red, Leroy Carr, Memphis Minnie, and Peetie Wheatstraw while more obscure artists include Keghouse, Mother McCollum, Philip Moore and Lethia Hill - and plenty more of each! And don’t forget our on-going series

The Complete Wynonie Harris. This week we present session #6 in the series.

Tune in - It all happens during Hours # 2 & 3. Only on BBS!
