BLUES BEFORE SUNRISE FOR 8/28/2016
WHAT- WHITE GUITARISTS ON BBS?

SAY IT AIN’T SO!

On this week’s edition of BBS we’ll feature a couple of notable guitarists. During Hour #1 we’ll present an extended set with Charlie Christian protégée Mary Osborne. Mary was a young white girl who saw Charlie Christian perform in her hometown of Minot North Dakota and then actually met Charlie who encouraged her to pursue Jazz guitar. The sides come from a CD under her name, “A Girl & Her Guitar” from a UK reissue of the original LP. Then during Hour #3 we’ll focus on George Barnes who first appeared on record playing electric guitar on records for the legendary Lester Melrose during the 1930s. George started out as a white teenager backing the great Blue singers including Big Bill Broonzy , Blind John Davis, Jazz Gillum, The Yas-Yas girl and many others. He started playing Blues and had an extended career moving to Country, Pop, and Rock. We’ll sample a bit of it all by sorting through four CDs on the El Toro label, George Barnes Vols I & II 1938-1962. Me betcha you like ‘um! That and all of our other regular features guaranteed to keep you awake all night – no really!
